Glacier Mice Code of Conduct

The Glacier Mice Code of Conduct sets out the standards of professionalism, respect, safety and responsible behaviour we expect from our guides, staff, partners and guests.

Last updated: 19 September 2026

1. Our Principles

Glacier Mice has operated guided glacier and ice cave experiences in Southeast Iceland since 2015. We believe responsible tourism depends on professional conduct, respect for people, respect for nature and a strong safety culture.

Everyone involved in our operations is expected to contribute to a safe, respectful and professional environment.

2. Professional Conduct

Glacier Mice staff and guides are expected to act professionally and responsibly when representing the company.

This includes:

  • Treating guests, colleagues and partners with courtesy and respect
  • Communicating clearly and honestly
  • Following company procedures and operational requirements
  • Working within their training, competence and responsibilities
  • Taking reasonable care of company and safety equipment
  • Raising safety or operational concerns when they arise

3. Respect & Inclusion

We aim to provide a welcoming and respectful environment for guests, employees, guides and partners.

Harassment, intimidation, threatening behaviour, bullying or deliberate discrimination are not acceptable in connection with Glacier Mice activities.

Guests and staff are expected to respect personal boundaries, cultural differences and the dignity of others.

4. Safety Comes First

Safety decisions must not be compromised by pressure to complete a particular route, reach a specific location or maintain a planned itinerary.

Guides are expected to follow the company’s safety procedures, risk assessments and operational decisions. Guests must follow instructions given by guides in relation to safety.

A guide may modify or discontinue an activity when conditions, participant behaviour or other circumstances create an unacceptable safety concern.

More information is available in our Safety Policy.

5. Responsible Behaviour on the Glacier

Glacier environments contain hazards that may not be obvious to visitors. Guests must remain with their group and follow the route and instructions provided by their guide.

Participants are expected to:

  • Remain with the guided group
  • Respect safety boundaries and route decisions
  • Use safety equipment as instructed
  • Avoid entering crevasses, ice caves or other areas without guide approval
  • Avoid actions that may place themselves or others at unnecessary risk
  • Tell the guide if they are experiencing difficulty

6. Respect for Nature

Glacier Mice operates in a sensitive and constantly changing natural environment. We expect both staff and guests to minimise unnecessary impact on the places we visit.

We ask everyone to:

  • Leave no litter behind
  • Follow established routes where appropriate
  • Avoid unnecessary disturbance of natural features
  • Respect wildlife and the surrounding environment
  • Follow instructions relating to protected or sensitive areas

Our broader environmental commitments are explained in our Environmental Policy.

7. Alcohol, Drugs & Impairment

Participants must be capable of safely taking part in the booked activity.

A person may be refused participation where alcohol, drugs, medication-related impairment or another form of impairment appears to create a safety concern for that person, the group or our staff.

Staff and guides must not undertake safety-sensitive duties while impaired.

8. Respect for Guides & Safety Decisions

Glacier conditions, weather and access can change quickly. Operational decisions are therefore sometimes made or changed at short notice.

Guests are expected to respect decisions made by guides concerning routes, equipment, group management, weather, glacier conditions and whether an activity can safely continue.

Commercial considerations or a guest’s preference to visit a particular location do not override a safety decision.

9. Photography & Respect for Others

Photography is welcome on our tours where it can be done safely. Guests should remain aware of their surroundings and follow guide instructions when taking photographs.

Photography or recording should not interfere with group movement, safety procedures or the reasonable privacy of other participants.

10. Behaviour Towards Staff & Other Guests

Abusive, threatening, violent or seriously disruptive behaviour towards guides, staff, other guests or third parties is not acceptable.

Glacier Mice may refuse or discontinue participation where a person’s behaviour creates a significant safety concern or seriously disrupts the experience of others.

11. Reporting Concerns

Guests, employees and partners are encouraged to raise concerns about unsafe, inappropriate or unprofessional behaviour.

If possible, immediate safety concerns should be raised directly with the guide or responsible member of staff so they can be addressed promptly.

Other concerns may be reported to Glacier Mice through our Contact page or by email at info@glaciermice.is.

12. Shared Responsibility

A positive glacier experience depends on cooperation between guests, guides and everyone involved in the operation.

We ask all participants to show good judgement, respect the natural environment, follow reasonable instructions and contribute to a safe and enjoyable experience for the whole group.

Our standard: treat people with respect, treat the glacier with respect and never compromise safety for convenience, schedule or expectation.
